Cover Letter

To whom it may concern,
My name is Jay Leaman; my interests are volleyball and music. For band class as school, I have played the Tenor Sax, and the clarinet. I also play the guitar and a bit of the piano. Music is a way to express one's self, and that is what makes it appealing for me. I have been in band since grade six, and have thoroughly enjoyed it, along with the rest of the classmates. One of the only sports I play is volleyball. The team is made up of some great guys, who are fun to be around. Our school volleyball team has made it to provincials 2 times. I like volleyball because of the teamwork that you need, because you can’t play 6 positions at the same time.
Teamwork is one of my strengths. It is crucial in sports to have good teamwork, or else it won’t work. Another strength I have is problem thinking. It is very useful when I am at work, and at school. When there is a problem, I do all that I can to help figure it out. Some of my accomplishments are getting a 2nd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and Learning how to ski and snowboard. I started Tae Kwon Do when I was 4 and got my black belt 7 years later. I first learned to ski when I was very young, and then learned to snow board when I was 12, and now I can do any run on the ski hill.
My goals are to be successful at what I am doing, and make a name for myself. Because when I do, I won’t have to worry financially and can live how I want to. Another one of my goals is to save enough money to travel around the world, with a few friends. My last goal is to enjoy life and not overwork. I want to be able to go out sometimes and have a little fun here and there.

Miss Watchingu,

My name is Jay Leaman, and I am a student working for your “Student Pro Painters”. There are a few things that have come to my attention, and I was hoping that you would consider them. As you may know, your nephew, Joe, works with us as a painter. As of lately, he has been arriving late to work. I know that we all have things to do, but he has made a commitment to be here when he has to.

I have also noticed that Joe smokes. When her smokes he leaves so it doesn’t bother the rest of us, but he is taking extra breaks to go smoke and he is leaving his butts around. I understand that some people smoke a lot, but it would be very helpful if you could ask him to take less breaks, or shorter ones at least, and to put his butts in the designated places for them.

Some of the other employees have mentioned to me that Joe works at an inefficient pace, and it puts more work on us. I know we all have days where we just need a rest, but this is a reoccurring thing. The other employees and I would really appreciate it, if you would ask him to put a little more effort into his job.

From experience, everyone is tired after a long day of work. And Joe has adopted a no clean up policy. When we are done he goes to smoke or sits down. Would you please consider talking to Joe, to tell him that cleaning up is part of the job.

While I have been working here, I have overheard that Joe can be confrontational with some of the other employees.  From observing I have figured that it must be from the amount of work that Joe does. If you could find some time in your schedule to talk to him in person or as a group, it would be very much appreciated.

I understand after work, people just want to go home. I have seen Joe leave to go home early many times, letting the other employees finish his part and clean up. I think that it is unfair, because if everyone did that, there would be a lot unfinished and a lot to clean. Would you please consider talking to him to see why he leaves early?

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and think about it. If you would like to ask any questions, feel free to call me. I hope that we can work something out so everyone is happy.

College Application

I have conquered the deepest trench and the tallest mountain. I am so bright that I don’t need a light to see in the dark. Friends say that I’m impressive; Parents say that I’m Excellent, and teachers say I’m magnificent. I am so good looking that my hair does itself. I am so alluring that people get distracted when I walk by. I am so charming that I can break the ice by thinking about it, or by throwing a rock at it. I am so aware, that I can hear braille, feel perfume and smell words. I have such a static personality that when I meet you, it will be a shock. My good friend Morgan Freeman tries to imitate me, Oprah asks me for help, and my friends copy my homework. I have been to the moon and back, and have traveled across the world in 79 days. When I walk, the ocean parts and gives way for me to walk. On Monday's I go to Africa and build schools for children, Tuesday's I go to France and act in charity plays, and on Wednesday's I stay home and do homework. I can eat food without utensils, and keep my hands clean. I can drink 2 gallons of water without stopping to breathe. I have been to pre-school, middle school and high school. But I have never been to College before.

Alone

The chairs were cold and support less. Just like the nurses that glared at as they walked by. The leather on the armrests were cracked from people grasping on to tight. Roses and morphine filled the air. The smell made me sick, and waiting there wasn’t helping. Through the abyss of people sobbing I could hear the beeps of the heart monitors.  The lights above flickered occasionally with that annoying buzzing. My hands were shaking while I stared at the doors, waiting for the man in blue to walk out and tell me that “Everything was ok”. I couldn’t take it anymore; I got up and headed to a window to get some fresh air. The smell of leaves and rain rushed into my nose, reminding me of the crash. The bitter air riffled through my jacket, reminding me that this was happening. I took one last breath then sauntered back to my seat, it looked just as uninviting as when I had arrived. The doors seemed to mock me, hiding everything behind it.  I looked at the clock over the counter, not knowing how long I had been here. The constant ticking of the clock seemed to calm me down a little. Unsure of how much time passed, the doors opened. A man walked out and looked around the room, and was making his way over. I stood up to go talk to him, but he walked past me and comforted another family that was there. Desperate, I asked him if he knew the condition of my mother. He told me that he “Didn’t know” and left. I sat back down; with each passing minute I felt my world crumble more, more until there was only darkness. I heard the squeak of the door hinges, but I didn’t look or move. I continued to stare at the ground, until I saw a pair of shoes. I bolted up from my seat, and I noticed that there were tears streaming down from my face, I could taste the bitterness of each tear. My knee’s started to shake, for fear of what he would tell me. “Your mother will be fine” He said “she just needs lots of rest. If you want, you can go see her”. My shoulder’s relaxed and I made my way to the room, each footstep echoed as I walked. I stopped before the door, afraid of what I might see. I took a breath and entered the room. There my mother lay still on her bed. She looked as fragile as porcelain. I was so relieved that I couldn’t move a muscle. As I stood there she looked over at me, and slowly she smiled.

Expository Paragraph

Jay                                  It is important to keep learning throughout life.

Like the saying goes “You learn from your mistakes”. It is important to keep learning throughout life. If you stop learning, how do you progress and evolve in life. Anne Sullivan, scientists and Jamal Wallace from the book “Finding Forrester” by Mike Rich are all examples of people that continue to learn.

Anne Sullivan was the teacher of Helen Keller. When Anne was five she had to learn a style of sign language because she lost most of her sight from trachoma. She had to learn how to communicate so she could get an education and escape poverty. Anne had the chance to attend Perkins school for the blind, where she continued to learn. When she had graduated she was given the job to help Helen Keller, a girl who was blind, deaf and mute. Anne had to learn how Helen thought in order to get through and teach her. Through the hardships Anna had she was still able to continue to learn and use the knowledge.

Scientists have been learning since they were born, and still are when they work. The scientists study certain things, to learn more and to help people. They learn what the cure is for certain diseases or find a way to reproduce body parts. Scientists have to be constantly learning to advance. If they didn’t continue to learn we would hit a dead end, and nothing new would happen. For scientists, their job depends on the advancing in knowledge. Learning is what drives them, because it fills their thirst for knowledge.

Jamal Wallace from "Finding Forrester" continues to learn when he seeks the help from a man in his apartment. The man, Forrester, helps Jamal with his writing. With the help from Forrester, Jamal continues to learn. Using the help that Jamal receives, he is offered many scholarships into prestigious schools. He later learns that Forrester died, but left him with an opportunity to show what he has learned by finishing the book he left.

Continuing to learn in life is important, because it is important for growth and discovery. Even though we don’t know always it, we are always learning. Learning may seem like a simple thing, but it is one of the most important aspects in life.

Captain Van Camp
Commander
HMS Princess Margaret

O Captain, My Captain:

Captain of this sinking death trap! Might I be so lucky to survive this crisis? Compared to the other crew members I am like a robot, hard working and dedicated. I know how to cook, clean and organize. Out of everyone on the submarine, there is only one person that looks better than me, that person would be our one and only captain. Everyone else doesn’t look half as good with their silky hair, shedding and making a mess. I can also play a few instruments: the guitar, saxophone and the clarinet. From what I’ve heard, there are also other people that like to play guitar; and musicians stick together. And by the chance that I don't make it, I will haunt you. We all know what asian ghosts are like *cough, Grudge*

 Sincerely,

Jay Leaman

Single Life by Dufflyn explains the upsides of not dating a man. Dufflyn is good at expressing herself that you can sense she feels in control or is being humorous. "For the first time in my life, my bathroom is my own!" and "Men and women should just live next door and visit when they're horny!" The poem speaks to me because it is saying that you don't always need to have someone else to be with you all the time, that being single can also be a good thing. The way that Dufflyn delivered the poem really made me think, analyze and understand, and that's why i liked this poem
Does it confuse you when people say "I'm an emotional idiot so get away from me... I mean marry me."? In Maggie Estep's poem Emotional Idiot she talks about relationships and how they seem to be. It is humorous because one second she’s telling you to "get away from [her]" then the next she is saying "I mean, come here" and it's confusing because Maggie keeps contradicting herself. I think that the theme is that relationships are not always perfect, but you have to make with what you got. The way that she tells the guy to get away from her and then to come back,
In Thea Monyee's poem Woman to Woman she talks about another girl trying to steal her husband. Thea shows her seriousness by telling the other woman that "[her] skirt is so short that is already shows [her] best assets. She explains how the other woman is conceited by "telling your friends that he’s cheating on me because he really wants you" Just because you can take someone's partner does not make you better than them. I like how Thea explained that "when he can’t deal with all of me, he goes to you" admitting that she can be hard to stand sometimes.
